Poised to graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Biology at the University of Calgary this spring, Baljit puts her strong ambitious mind into her passion for science and art. Baljit hopes to one-day focus her career on environment concerns as a biological scientist.

She would like to instigate change through the application and research of green approaches as a method of improving natural surroundings and environmental sustainability.

Baljit expresses her creativity through visual fine art. Her passion for art began at a young age and developed in both ability and creativity throughout her secondary and post secondary education.

Baljit considers art as a creative outlet within which she can escape the conformities of everyday life. Her skill and drive has allowed her to showcase her work in various Calgary galleries and auctions.

Baljit is inspired by her community and gives back by volunteering her time to organizations such as the Mustard Seed, a non-profit organization aimed at providing services for homeless adults and youth.

Baljit is also heavily involved within her cultural community. She volunteers her time to the local Sikh temple by preparing and serving food to the religious patrons. Additionally, her creativity allowed her to design a t-shirt, the proceeds of which went to her local food bank.

With a personal motto of letting her curiosity lead her, Baljit has participated in a variety of activities. She is a regular patron of a popular hot yoga studio in Calgary and is continuously looking for exciting new ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, Baljit is a member of the Calgary fashion scene, having modelled in fashion shows around the city.

Her passion for life has lead her to travel the world and continuously seek new adventures!

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I have played on my high school badminton team as well as a member on the rock climbing club.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

My cousin’s wife who I call my sister in law, Nonie, has been a huge influence in my life. She has been through a lot in her life and has been so strong through it all. Anything she does she has been very successful with. Being Calgary’s top 40 under 40 in 2010, she has shown that with hard work anyone is able to reach their dreams and ambitions. Not only do I get inspired by her hard work ethic, but I have learned lots from the wisdom that she possesses.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

I am proud to have my degree completed in Biological Sciences with a minor in Visual Studies this April. Being able to work in research labs at the University of Calgary, I have been able to contribute my knowledge to science and further experimentation to have a positive impact on our environment. As an emerging artist, I am very proud of being able to showcase my work in galleries in Calgary, as well as start a small business with a small clientele to sell my artwork. Also, I am a member of Emerging Canadian Artist Program (ECAP), where I still continue to sell my work.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I am very creative minded, as well as a very scientific/rational person. I can go from painting or printmaking in an art studio and producing high end work, to working in a microbiology laboratory testing oil sand tailings water samples for microorganisms. These two extreme sides of me have developed me into who I am.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

By following my passion in art, my career ambition is to one day open a Fine Art Gallery. I hope to accomplish this one day by not only networking and producing my own work to get my name out as an artist, but by staying involved in the art community.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job would be doing something that would make me and others around me happy. So other than being a professional artist, I would become a professional baker and decorator, like Buddy from “Cake Boss.” I love to bake on my spare time and always bake my friends delicious deserts of all kinds. Food is something that can make all people come together. If I had more time on my hands I would love to use my art skills to bake and decorate deserts of all kinds!

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born and raised in Calgary. It was tough growing up since I was bullied at a young age. I learnt how to stand up for myself by not caring what others thought of me. By these experiences I have grown to be a stronger person, making me into the person I am today. My family has always been supportive in anything I do. We live by semi-traditional ways, and I have always been brought up to be school driven and ambitious towards my goals. Like my mom would say to me, “anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

The most interesting place that I’ve been to is Sierra Madre which is close to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. At this beautiful mountain range I went, horseback riding, zip lining and rock climbing down the mountains and waterfalls.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

I hope to be working as an environmental scientist and have completed a master degree of my interest. I also hope have opened a Fine Art Gallery successfully running.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I am an outgoing and down to earth individual who loves to help people see the positive things in life. Being able to bring a smile to a person’s face, whether it’s by telling a silly joke or lending a helping hand, makes me glow and brings happiness to my soul. I appreciate the little things in life and like to find beauty in nature and people around me. Having the opportunity to run for Miss Universe Canada, I would like to help others to appreciate the things they have around them. As well as, how to make the best of situations they are in order to help them reach their greatest potential.
