Height:
 5’5″
Hometown: Amherstburg, ON

Amber Bernachi was born in Windsor, Ontario and raised in the small town of Amherstburg. She has a passion for living life to the fullest and always tries to step outside her comfort zone. She loves to inspire others to do the same and believes that there are no limits to life except for the ones we create ourselves. A positive attitude and determination is Amber’s strategy for success. She graduated with an Honours degree in Business Administration and a Political Science Degree, both from the University of Windsor. She will be graduating this June with a Bachelor of Education Degree and will continue her education to earn her MBA. Academics have always been an important priority in her life. Amber enjoys traveling around the world and experiencing new cultures, religions and meeting people. The most amazing experience of her life was when she had the opportunity to travel through Thailand as a volunteer, working in an orphanage, a day care center and within the underdeveloped communities. The children made a huge impact on Amber’s life and will forever hold a spot in her heart. She hopes to one day return to Thailand and to also travel to other areas of the world in need. She has visited over 20 countries and is always looking forward to her next opportunity to travel. She believes that life is enriched by the people you meet and the experiences you create with them.

Volunteering has always played an important role in Amber’s life, whether it is coaching minor soccer, dance, figure skating or traveling halfway across the world to work with children. She enjoys being involved with fund raising and has also organized events within her community. She has volunteered at a number of events held by Transition to Betterness, a local charitable foundation, which Amber believes plays an important role in providing comfort to those in hospice care and she will continue to support them in any way possible.

The most important lesson Amber believes she has learned is that the secret to happiness is found in the acceptance of self. Life is about finding yourself and your passion, it is about being happy in your own skin and accepting yourself for who you are; mind, body and soul. Her motto is, if you don’t like something about your life, change it. Every day is a new chance to start over and become the person you want to be. The key is to find balance and while you are trying to find your balance it is always important to remember that failure is absolutely necessary. It is necessary for growth and achievement. If you look at all the great people in history one of the main things they have in common is failure. It is how we learn and grow as human beings and we should never allow failure to define us, we should allow it to motivate us to the next level.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I have many interests, I love to play sports, read, spend time with friends and family, but what I enjoy most is that I absolutely love to travel. I have enjoyed learning about so many of the different cultures and religions that I’ve experienced around the world. There are so many beautiful people I’ve met during my travels. The amazing natural beauty of the world’s landscapes has also been a highlight of my travels. There is so much that the world has to offer and I hope to experience as much of it as possible. I love the quote “Travel is the only thing you buy, that makes you richer”. For me, travelling is an important investment you make in your life, which repays with rich experiences and beautiful memories. I can honestly say the best memories in my life thus far have been made traveling throughout this amazing country and around the world with family and friends. I have been to over 20 countries and I plan to continue to add to this list.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

I studied classical piano and also enjoyed playing more contemporary music as well. I also studied dance with a focus in the modern, ballet and hip hop disciplines.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I have enjoyed playing and competing in: soccer, volleyball, snowboarding, skiing, long boarding, track and field, figure skating, swimming, horseback riding, and baseball.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

My Nonna had such a profound influence on my life growing up. She taught me so much about my Italian culture and I am so grateful for that. She came from Italy with very little and together with my grandfather, they managed to create a beautiful life for themselves and their families. She has shown me that through passion and dedicated work, anything is possible. She also instilled in me the love of good food, spending time with family, and enjoying the simple things in life. Some of the best memories of my childhood were spent at her house in her garden or cooking in the basement with her.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My proudest personal accomplishment thus far would be earning the two University degrees that I have and finishing work on the third degree that I will be graduating with in June of this year. I have always made academics an important aspect of my life and I strive to keep it an important part of my life whether it is keeping up with political or economical issues around the world or in my own community. I believe it is important to be educated and well versed in current affairs.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

The most unique thing that has ever happened to me was deciding to let go of all my fears and go bungee jumping in a canyon in Quebec. I am absolutely terrified of heights but I am also a huge believer of challenging myself. Bungee jumping has been on my bucket list for a number of years and this past September I felt I needed to check it off. It was the most exhilarating, terrifying experience of my life, but I plan to eventually top it by skydiving. I believe that it is important to continually do thing that takes you out of your comfort zone in order to grow. In this way I feel we can learn things about ourselves and accomplish things you never knew you were capable of. It is important to try things you never thought you would like and you might just end up falling in love with it.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is to work for a large financial firm, preferably in hedge funds. I enjoyed every aspect of my time earning my undergraduate degree in business. I met amazing people who I hope to one day again have the opportunity to work with. I have completed my degree in Business Administration with a focus in finance and I plan to continue my education and receive my MBA, as well. I also plan on eventually taking my CFA.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised in a beautiful, small town called Amherstburg. My childhood was amazing and I have a lot of positive memories that I hold close to my heart. I was fortunate enough to have two loving parents and an amazing little sister. My childhood was always full of love, travelling, activities and positive influence. My parents have always made a point to travel together as a family at least once a year. Not only have they sparked that desire in my own life but they have also made me the ambitious goal seeking individual that I am. They put me in every sport and extra curricular activity possible but always placed an emphasis on education and being a responsible, giving member of the community.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

The most unusual job I had was selling paint door to door with a friend. I didn’t have any experience in painting nor did I have any idea as to who would order paint from two 15 year old girls showing up at their door, but it was a summer job and we were happy to do it.

List any volunteering you have done.

I love to volunteer and I take advantage of every opportunity possible. My volunteering and fundraising began at the young age of 11. I held a fundraiser at my grade school with my friend to help raise money for a young boy in our community who needed an operation to remove a brain tumor. Ever since that day I have continued to create fundraising events and volunteer my time as much as possible:

Volunteering Solutions 2012- Travelled to Thailand for a month to work in orphanages and daycare centers. We also worked in underprivileged communities in the area.

Heart and stroke campaigning

Heart Breaker Challenge – 2013 for Hotel Dieu Grace Hospitals

NOH8 Against Bullying Campaign photo shoot

Coaching soccer ages 3-5 for AMSA in Amherstburg 2007-2012

Coaching Dance team –returned to coach at my grade school-Stella Maris

Coaching figure skating at AMSA in Amherstburg

Competed in the Dragon Boats competition to support breast cancer 2012 and 2013.

Transition to Betterness events: Litup event, Boxing match event, Annual gala hostess, golf tournaments – volunteered.

What is your most unusual talent?

My most unusual talent, as I have been told by many people in my life, is my ability to multi-task at a very high level. I have been known to take on the role of “superwoman” because of everything I attempt to accomplish at any given time in my life. I am always focused on many things at one time such as my academic studies, working two jobs, participating in sports, volunteering at events, organizing events, traveling, competing, or checking something off my bucket list. I am a driven go-getter type of personality and I don’t think I’ll ever stop being this way. In saying this, however, I still maintain a healthy balance in my life and make my health a top priority, as well. I believe as long as you are doing what makes you happy in life; there really is no need to slow down.

Where is the most interesting place you have been to?

The most interesting place I have been to, so far, is Thailand. I have never seen such a beautiful culture with such humble people. I was able to work in a number of schools and it was an amazing, life changing experience. Through this experience working with the children in Thailand the one thing I learned and will keep with me the rest of my life is realizing that language is not the main way to communicate with others. The children I met did not understand English and I did not understand Thai, but our universal way of communicating was through smiling and the genuine feeling of being loved and appreciated. We spent a week with these children at a daycare and I cannot believe how much of an impact those children have had on my life. The most difficult part of that trip for me was having to say goodbye to those children.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I will be married with children and I will be successfully working at my dream job. I will have travelled to many more beautiful countries and have met more amazing people. I will have continued to volunteer as much of my time as possible and I will hopefully use my business skills to be more involved in the administrative side of running charities. I will continue to be a positive role model and try to inspire as many people as I can. I hope to always keep an open heart and be continuously inspired by the people I meet along the way.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

I would like to let you know what being Miss Universe Canada would mean to me. Becoming Miss Universe Canada would be the ultimate experience of a lifetime. It would mean being able to reach out to women and children across Canada in hopes of inspiring and helping them to reach their own goals. If I was Miss Universe Canada, my goals would be to continue to be a part of my current charities as well as helping a number of other charities in my community, across Canada and the world. My ultimate goal would be to start a charity of my own. Holding the title of Miss Universe Canada would give me the platform to be able to reach out to and inspire others. I would also like to bring awareness to important issues that are affecting our Canadian societies, such as bullying, poverty in education, unemployment, animal rights and equality for all. I believe that Miss Universe Canada should be a genuine, ambitious, strong, selfless, confident, inspiring and beautiful woman.
