Maddison Fysh was born in London, Ontario, Canada. She is a proud 22 year old Canadian who is currently working on her undergraduate Degree in Sociology and Sport Psychology at The University of Western Ontario. Enroute to her post-secondary education having earned an academic scholarship, Maddison achieved many other awards and accolades including; valedictorian, Ontario Principles Award for Leadership, Award of Excellence in Student Parliament and was the recipient for the much coveted Spirit Award for Regina Mundi College. Apart from academia, Maddison is also an accomplished athlete. She embraces athletics as a fierce competitor; excelling in figure skating, dance, volleyball and rowing. Maddison had been recognized as London, Ontario’s figure skater of the year, guest skated with cast members of Disney on Ice and in 2013 was awarded a silver medal at the National Figure Skating Championships in Kamloops, B.C. with the Port Stanley Ice Breakers Syncro team. She can also be seen at the hockey rink teaching skills to local skaters of all ages and athletic ability. Maddison is currently coaching skating for the city of London and is actively training for her next national figure skating competition. But it isn’t just academics and sports. Yoga is a great interest of Maddison and she spends countless hours volunteering at a local Yoga Studio helping with community classes.

And finally Maddison takes great pride in participating in a myriad of activities at her local church. Maddison firmly believes that everyone deserves a chance to be the best they can be and it certainly was an affirmation for her when she was nominated and chosen to attend the YMCA Women’s of Excellence Banquet of 2011. She believes anything is possible if you just believe.

What are you interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I have many interests. I love to be very active. I enjoy figure skating, modelling, working with kids and reading a good book when I have some down time at my grandparents family cottage up north.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.).

I have been a figure skater since I was four years old. I have training in the arts including dance (contemporary) and music. This has taught me to carry myself gracefully and to truly respect the amount of work that goes into artistic movements in order for something to look beautiful and professional.

In what sports, if any have you participated?

I have been very active all my life and love participating in sporting activities. The sports I have participated in during my public and high school days were basketball, volleyball, track and field, rowing, dance, figure skating, and baseball. Today I continue to figure skate at a national level.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

One person that has had a great deal of influence on my life is Tessa Virtue. She is a proud Canadian who has represented our country nationally and internationally in the world of figure skating. Figure skating has had such a huge impact on my life and I have learned to respect the sport and the people in it more than ever. Tessa is such a down to earth woman who never lets fear get in her way. She is a strong confident woman who is always determined to succeed no matter what obstacles she may have faced. Even after all of her accomplishments, whenever we cross paths she is still the graceful, quiet Tessa who is very respectful and genuine.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in the pageant)?

It is hard to choose just one accomplishment because I believe I have had so many. I was very proud when I was selected as the London, Ontario figure skater of the year. I was very happy to know that my hard work and dedication was noticed by the people from the Skate Canada organization and the local community. Apart from my success in the athletics, I was also very honoured when I was chosen to be a high school student spirit leader at the Ontario Student Leadership Conference (OSLC). I had the privilege to coach and mentor 2500 student leaders from all over Ontario to help them build confidence and excitement about how to be the best leader they can possibly be for their student body.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I was very fortunate to be chosen to skate with Disney on Ice for a day when they came to London. It was such an honour to learn and shadow skaters who had such wonderful performance skills. I definitely learned a lot.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is to live, learn, and grow in the world of arts and performance. I have a great passion for modelling and working with the camera. It also would be a dream come true to travel with different pageants internationally. It has always been a dream on mine to see the world while doing what I love to do. In order to attain those goals, I always eat right and keep a consistent workout plan. I thoroughly enjoy working on these goals because I am learning something new every day and have met many amazing people.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job in life would be to land a contract with Victoria Secret.

Are you currently a student?

Yes. I am a fourth year student at Western University studying Sociology and Health Care as well as Sport Psychology.

Are you currently employed?

Yes. I am a figure skating coach. I coach children of all ages around the city of London, Ontario. On top of that I work at a facility called the Little Gym. It is a gym for young children where they learn and grow as they build self-confidence and maintain a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and development of motor functioning skills.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I had a great childhood. I grew up in London, Ontario. I was raised by both of my parents who loved and encouraged me to always do my best. I lived in the city but spent and continue to spend time at my grandparents cottage where I can get back to nature and enjoy the beautiful wooded surroundings and the nature that goes along with it. I loved growing up in both city and experiencing cottage life because they were so different from each other. I feel very fortunate to have been exposed to so many different activities. I am happy to say that my parents always supported me to be my best, do my best, but never forced me to do something I didn’t want to do, except maybe washing dishes! They always let me choose the things I loved to do most.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

Perhaps the most unusual job I had was working in the corn fields in Kent County, Ontario detasseling corn. Corn is often planted in two varieties. Tassels are removed from one of the variety of plants allowing that variety to be fertilized by the tassels of the other variety resulting in a hybrid form of corn. This often results in a higher yield of corn. It was crazy hot and the hours were long. We wore really ugly clothes and funny hats, but we had a blast. I gained true respect for the hard work done by those working by hand in the fields of our farmland.

List any volunteering you have done. Volunteering I have done includes:

  • World Figure Skating Championships (mentored by an RCMP officer)
  • The Yoga Shack (to help encourage people from the community to obtain a better understanding and passion for yoga)
  • Out of the cold dinners through my church
  • Church luncheons that support area organizations through free will donations
  • Time keeping at basketball games
  • Refereeing volleyball matches

What is my most unusual talent?

My most unusual talent is that I have a very photographic memory. I remember events very vividly. I can remember events from when I was a toddler in very fine detail. Today my memory continues to be photographic and this has helped me with my studies, and every day events.

Where is the most interesting place you have been to?

The most interesting place I have been to is the Capilano Suspension Bridge in Vancouver, British Columbia. I was relatively young the first time I went on it so I had no fear. I would like to try it again to see if I feel the same way!

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years I hope to be well established in my career helping others in some form, as well as raising a beautiful and healthy family. On top of that, I hope to have made an impact on the charities I have chosen to support which are the SOS Children’s Villages Foundation and the World Wild Life Foundation (WWF).

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

So far through this journey to possibly being crowned the next Miss Universe Canada, I have come in contact with so many remarkable people and the support has been nothing short of amazing. I am looking forward to using my talents, getting on the National stage and meeting even more people from across the country.
