What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

I am an artistic individual. I love drawing, painting, fashion, dancing, singing and henna. On my day off one would find me either doodling abstract designs for henna, working on Photoshop edits, reading about self-development, singing, dancing, cooking, photography or exploring new places. I believe that helping others is the greatest way to make a positive difference in the world. Whether it is through a positive gesture or spreading good energy or an act of kindness. I believe all of us are unique and have the potential to give back to the community and world in ways that are unique to us and our abilities.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.).

As a young child I took music and singing lessons for 2 years. Art has also been a large part of my childhood and I took many classes, as well as learnt from both my parents. In Valsad, a small city in Gujarat, where I was born and raised, garba was a very popular and traditional dance. I spent many years taking lessons learning different styles and forms of this dance as a way of connecting with my cultural roots.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

I played recreational badminton, volleyball and soccer in high school.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

My grandmother has always been my greatest role model and a major influence in my life. She was a teacher in a time and culture where women were not expected to have careers. This has always inspired me to do more and be more than the cultural norms of society. As a child I would watch her teach and make a positive impact on her students. This encouraged me to live my life with kindness, humility and intelligence. She taught me to work with patience, with integrity and with an unrelenting work ethic. If I can be half the woman my grandmother is, I know I will have made a difference in this world.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

Winning the Air Canada People’s choice award in the Miss India Canada 2015 pageant was one of my proudest accomplishments. This marked a time in my life of great personal growth. It was a new experience that tested my resilience, self-esteem and confidence. I am proud of the person that I have become today. I am the sum of my family, peers, education, challenges, obstacles and experiences. I will continue to grow and my accomplishments of today will act as beacons for my tomorrow.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I am a vegetarian that does not drink caffeine who has an irrational fear of drowning and an obsession with butterflies.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I want to use my knowledge, resources, graphic design skills, social media and other means to spread awareness about the dependence on prescription drugs. I want to make people realize that there are healthier alternatives available for dealing with many health conditions. I believe that exercise, meditation, yoga, spending time in nature and other physical activities can have a very positive impact on one’s health. I want to spread the message that the greatest form of healing power is often the one within ourselves.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

My childhood was divided between two cities of India, Mumbai and Valsad. One was a hustling, bustling and happening place whereas the other was quiet and peaceful. It was a balance of urban, suburban and rural setting. I grew up in nature with farms, gardens, rivers and lakes to play and spend entire summers in. As a child, during every break I got from school, one would find me somewhere in the farms of fruits and flowers, vegetables or at river banks. Chasing butterflies, harvesting fruits and vegetables and arranging flowers with my grandparents. Since childhood, I was exposed to major religions in the world thus have learnt to respect them all from an early age.

The most interesting place to me that I have been to so far is the natural caves in Xel-ha eco park in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The caves amazed me with their natural beauty and formation. I am usually scared of caves and deep water. So this experience was very new and different for me. The caves were mystical and sacred since they had been preserved with their natural beauty from the ever changing world outside.

If we know how to harness it we can achieve anything we want. Through Miss Universe Canada, I hope to empower other women to be leaders in their communities, countries and the world. Spread positivity, strength and unity among people and inspire them to create a positive change in their lives and people around them.
