Monica Rodriguez, 23, was born in Valle del Cauca, Colombia. At the age of six, Monica and her mother moved to Miami Beach, United States for approximately seven years before residing in Windsor, Ontario. She attended the University of Windsor for a double major in Spanish and Political Science but is looking to switching her major to Communication, Media, and Film come fall. Monica is very passionate about traveling and learning about new cultures. She also enjoys exercising, reading, learning Portuguese, and spending time with her friends and her loved ones. When she isn’t doing the previously mentioned activities, Monica dedicates her time to helping others but with children being the main focus. In 2015, she participated in ‘100 Years of Fashion,’ a fashion show which raised funds for children with cystic fibrosis. For almost a year, Monica has been volunteering at Easter Seals, a fundraising organization that supports children, youth, and young adults with physical disabilities and their families. She has helped organize several fundraising events such as, Drop Zone, an Easter Egg Campaign, and is currently working on this years Telethon. Monica wants to be an advocate; she wants to be the voice for the voiceless. If crowned Miss Universe 2016, Monica plans to use her title to increase awareness on child abuse, not only in Canada, but on a global level and to make sure to the best of her ability that children are cared for worldwide.
