Swati Abrol

Height: 5’3″
Hometown: Ottawa, ON

Swati is a 21 year old geophysics student from the nation’s capital, Ottawa. Three words that best describe Swati are: bold, passionate and ambitious. Swati sees everyday as a new opportunity to improve and learn to the best of her abilities so she can thrive and reach her full potential as a young woman.

From a young age, Swati would always read books and watch documentaries on the history of the Earth and dinosaurs. She later developed a passion for planetary geology, geophysics and astrophysics and decided that is what she wants to get a degree in. Swati has been to private school and considers herself a scholar who values education more than anything. She has her International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. Swati believes that education is the most powerful tool one can possess that you can never get taken away. She is also very keen in her research in the oil and natural gas industry and is constantly brainstorming new ideas on how to extract it in the safest and least-riskiest way possible. Swati sees herself obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in either (planetary) geophysics or petroleum engineering in the near future. Swati’s nature is extremely dedicated and passionate and will not stop at anything, especially when it comes to her education and research.

Swati is also very multi-culturally diverse. She is fully bilingual in English and (Chilean) Spanish as well as very advanced in Punjabi and Hindi. She also knows some French, Russian and Portuguese. She loves to learn about new cultures and languages and by living in the most multicultural country in the world, she embraces the opportunity to meet and connect with many people from different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. Swati comes from a very supportive, Hindu-Punjabi family and values all of her cultural traditions.

Although Swati has been very keen in her science ambitions since childhood, she also has been very intrigued by fashion and beauty at a young age. Ever since Swati was a young girl, she would watch fashion shows and beauty pageants (i.e. Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss USA, Miss Universe Canada) and would aspire to participate in as many as she can. It is her lifelong dream to be a Miss Universe title holder one day.

Along with being passionate, Swati is also generous and a humble person. She loves to tutor her fellow classmates and younger students. She sometimes does it as a job, and sometimes volunteers to tutor. She believes that everyone deserves a chance to reach their true potential through education and the first step is to understand everything being taught. That way society will have many fresh-minded and innovating people that can help change the world. Through teaching, Swati tries to inspire and spread the joy of learning. Swati believes through teaching, this is how she gives back to the community. Swati dreams of continuing her teaching on a national or even global scale. By winning Miss Universe Canada 2016, she strongly believes she will make a difference by creating initiatives and projects that help bring education to youth in developing countries.

English, Spanish, Punjabi, Hindi, some French, Russian and Portuguese.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

My interests include playing my electric guitar, travelling, swimming, riding my bicycle, reading, and science/math.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.).

  • Guitar training for about 5 years
  • Modeling and acting training for 4 months with Barbizon

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

Soccer, Fencing, Baseball, Volleyball, Tennis

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

Personally, I wouldn’t pick just one person. Instead there have been many people in my life who have influenced me in all senses. My professors at university show so much dedication and passion in their field and it inspires me to such an extent where I aspire to work as hard as they do and achieve my goals to the best of my abilities. My friends also have an influence on me through their humbleness and support through everything I do.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

I started to play the piano at the age of 7 and then the electric guitar at age 11. The electric guitar, a commonly male-dominated instrument, has helped me gain recognition both online and on-stage. My proudest accomplishment thus far is being selected as the first female (from a group of roughly 100 young men) to be the lead guitarist in a school rock band. Through this, I learned to believe in myself and my musical talent. Another event in my life that I consider to be a huge accomplishment is having participated in the Toronto-based pageant, Miss India-Canada where I made Top 16.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I think one of the most interesting things about me is that every day I speak three very different languages interchangeably (English, Punjabi and Spanish). Therefore because of that, I am able to learn and adapt to languages quickly. Also, every time I am involved in a competition that means a lot to me, I even surprise myself to see how competitive and passionate I can be.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I have two career ambitions. The first one is becoming a PhD Senior Geophysicist and/or Petroleum Engineer in the oil and gas industry. I have devoted my education to this industry to be involved in projects that make the extraction of natural oil and gas safe for the environment. My second career ambition is to teach (hence why I am dedicated to obtain a PhD) and spread the values and joy of learning. Since I am a math/science student and an artist at heart, it would be an honor to travel around Canada and developing countries to help give youth a well-rounded education so they too can set career and life goals. My goal is to inspire and teach youth to always be curious as curiosity is what leads to discovers. After Miss Universe Canada, I hope to participate in abroad volunteer trips to India, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nepal, etc… and help out to the best of my abilities.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

No doubt, my dream job would be to reign as Miss Universe Canada 2016 and become an aspiring Bollywood actress! On another note, I am also following my career path of becoming a Geophysicist and help revolutionize new and safe well-drilling techniques that minimize the risks of contamination for the multi-billion dollar oil and gas industry.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

Spending my life in nation’s capital, Ottawa, has been a blessing. Being around family and friends here has been the best way to never feel alone. My childhood has been filled with nothing but love and support from my dear family and friends. From becoming Female Athlete of the Year 2006 to flying a plane last year, I’ve always been the adventurous and spontaneous girl. I have always been encouraged to embrace my adventurous side and because of that, I am grateful for having such amazing people in my life who spread nothing but positivity. Thanks to my family’s support I participate in fencing (sport), I partake in pageants/modeling/acting opportunities, I fly planes, I travel the world, I tutor Spanish, Math and Science and lastly, I was lucky enough to have my parents buy me my first electric guitar 10 years ago where I fell in love with music and discovered my creativity.

As a child, I used to read books a lot, such as Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia. I used to even write my own short stories every day until my wrist wore out. I also always loved nature and the outdoors (now I study Geophysics, where the research involves going out and discovering the physics of the Earth’s natural systems!) and riding my bike in the summer time for hours. Another big part of my childhood was of course, the food. I grew up with mainly homemade Indian food and my favorite dish being my mom’s “Rajma chawal” (kidney beans and rice) and famous Indian snack “Pani Puri/Golgappa” (water balls)!

Overall, I am very blessed to have had such an amazing and memorable childhood where my family and friends always stood by my every decision, which helped me become the independent, responsible, humble, and caring woman of integrity that I am today.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

When I used to work in the Men’s department at The Hudson’s Bay, I used to teach men how to tie ties! Having gone to private school, the uniform required me to wear ties every day so I became an expert at tying them! I even gave quick tips to the customers on how to tie them easily and what kind of knot they prefer.

List any volunteering you have done.

  • For two weeks, I supervised a group of 15 children (ages 8-13) in a movie making program/club called Director’s Cut. I also helped the students use and operate Macintosh computers
  • I helped design an art exhibition at the Shenkman’s Art Centre in Eastern Ottawa (Orleans)
  • I tutor Spanish (and sometimes Math/Science) to high school and fellow university students

What is your most unusual talent?

I am an Xbox fanatic and I’ve been playing video games since the original Xbox came out. I’m very talented in RPG (role-playing games), such as Call of Duty! Video games spark my problem solving skills and are a good stress reliever. I’m also very talented at drawing/painting birds, as I have a beautiful parrot at home that I love and adore. I also have the gift of picking up languages easily.

Where is the most interesting place you have been to?

Cabins, West Virginia, USA – this small city is situated in the Appalachian Mountains where it is nearly impossible to get a phone signal, let alone Wi-Fi. For two weeks I got to put my phone aside and actually embrace and appreciate the beautiful mountains and nature there without any technology. It felt as if phones didn’t exist.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In ten years from now, I hope to have achieved three things. The first being a Miss Universe Canada title holder and secondly, earning a PhD in Geophysics/Petroleum Engineering. Lastly, I hope to be travelling around the world and participating in as many volunteer trips to developing countries that are in need of education, food and healthcare. Coming ten years down the road, I plan to have participated in these life-changing trips. These three things are my most important goals for me that I am determined to achieve in the next ten years. I also want to be a role-model and inspire as many people as I can in ten years from now.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

Firstly, it is with great honor to be selected as a National Finalist from Eastern Ontario-Ottawa. Words cannot describe how grateful I am to participate and compete for such a prestigious title.

Winning the title of MISS UNIVERSE CANADA would be the world to me. I’ve been up-to-date with these pageants since I was a little girl and always aspired to be a title-holder one day. Winning would be a life-changing moment for me since I would be able to follow through with all my ambitions and be able to achieve them with much more love and support from the nation and world. I would have the chance to make a difference in the world. I would have the chance to empower and inspire people to love and cherish themselves and to dream big while reaching for the stars. I would be able to teach and help spread poise and elegance to the best of my abilities.

Winning the prestigious title of MISS UNIVERSE CANADA means that I will have the chance to compete at MISS UNIVERSE where I would give it my all knowing that this is the greatest opportunity one can ask for and is the first step in making a difference in the world and perform every duty as an Ambassador of Goodwill.

With all integrity, I would like to thank my family and friends for their encouraging words and support through this memorable journey.
