Vanessa Skyers is a 21 year old who was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, and is currently living in Tecumseh, Ontario. She is of Mixed race. Vanessa graduated from Catholic Central high school in June of 2015, and then began her academic career at St.Clair College. She is in school for a medical assistant, and is also currently employed in retail.

Two summers ago Vanessa got extremely sick where she couldn’t eat or keep anything down for over 2 weeks. She lost a lot of weight, and ended up weighing 99 pounds. She felt insecure about herself. One of Vanessa’s biggest pet peeves is body shaming. She feels as if everyone is perfect in their own unique way. A lot of people would make fun of her for being “too skinny” but didn’t know the real reason as to why she was. It took over two years to get her actual weight back. She changed her life around and now currently goes to the gym, and eats better. Vanessa also suffers from having low blood sugar. Having to keep her sugar at a certain level is sometimes stressful and hard, but it doesn’t effect her everyday lifestyle.

Growing up Vanessa felt very different. She didn’t know which category she fell into being mixed race. Some people made jokes saying that she was either too light or too dark growing up. She didn’t feel comfortable, and at times wished that she was a different race or just one race. Vanessa felt as if she had to pick only one race to be. She soon realized that she was beautiful in her own way, and loves being mixed race. She believes that her journey and past has made her a strong independent women. Vanessa wants to inspire other women, or women of mixed race that it’s okay to be different. With all of this being said Vanessa is extremely excited and honoured to be in this years pageant.
