TORONTO, ON (Tuesday, May 27th, 2014) – A Canadian tradition, the 63rd annual Miss Universe® Canada was held on Saturday night at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
University of Toronto graduate Chanel Beckenlehner of Caledon, Ontario was crowned as the new Miss Universe Canada and will represent our Country at the annual Miss Universe® 2014 pageant. Canada is one of only four countries (along with France, Germany, and the USA) which have competed in each Miss Universe® pageant since its inception in 1952.
Chanel Beckenlehner was born and raised in picturesque Caledon, Ontario. She graduated from the University of Toronto as a Political Science Specialist. Down to earth, positive and approachable, Chanel has dedicated much of her life to service, giving back to the community by working with several charitable organizations that help young children by providing food, health care and shelter to families in need.
In fundraisers held across Canada, a record breaking $132,000 was raised by the 65 MUC 2014 Finalists in support of SOS Children’s Villages which cares for orphaned children and Operation Smile which carries out life changing cleft palate surgeries.
Chanel has a wide variety of hobbies through which she maintains a strong balance between sports and the arts. In her spare time she enjoys trying different cuisines, health and fitness, golfing and traveling experiencing new cultures and languages. She is a strong, confident woman who is not afraid of a challenge. Having elite athlete training in the equestrian sport of Dressage, she understands the winning mindset and work ethic needed to compete internationally.
A natural in front of the camera or on stage, one of her ambitions in life is to pursue an entertainment career, particularly as a television presenter. Obtaining the title of Miss Universe will allow Chanel to bring attention to important issues, especially those that involve women and children.
Having spent an entire year studying HIV/AIDS specifically, Chanel feels well prepared, educated and motivated to be a spokesperson for awareness and prevention. Her research efforts have concentrated on women’s health and reproductive issues, the social determinants of health, and the role of power / empowerment, stigma and harm reduction. Her goal is to be an empowering role model of beauty, health and leadership. Here lies the chance to be a positive role model for young women empowering them to strive for their personal and career goals
Now, Chanel is focusing all of her energies on a dream she has held since she was a little girl, to represent her country as Miss Universe Canada and to bring back to our beloved home, the Miss Universe® crown!
