Megen Wilkins was born in Brantford, Ontario, raised on her family’s farm. Megen is currently an undergraduate student at Trent University studying philosophy. Upon graduation, Megen plans on furthering her education by attending law school in hopes that she will become a child lawyer, specializing in family law. Her involvement with the school extends beyond her academic work as she is an active member of Trent University’s competitive dance team. Her love of dance shines through her role as a dance instructor, where she shares her passion for the art with her students.
Among Megen’s many goals is her chief aspiration to help those in need. Her drive and genuine care for children, fostered her desire to fight for children’s rights within the legal system. This passion extends to women’s rights, as she speaks on the importance of educating youth about these issues. Megen is an advocate for victims of domestic violence and strives to aid those in finding resources for recovery. Having been raised by a strong, single mother and business owner, Megen has always believed in the power of an incredible role model for young girls.
What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?
I am interested in politics, fashion, art, and drawing, most of all I enjoy dancing.
List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)
I have training in dance including classical ballet training.
In what sports, if any, have you participated?
I have not participated in any sports, other than competitive dance.
Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?
One of the most influential people in my life was Mrs. King, my elementary school art teacher. Mrs King was incredibly supportive, generous, and kind. She made a great impact on my life as her passion for the arts nurtured my love of dance, music, and visual arts. Her constant show of support, including her attendance to my dance recitals left me with the feeling of genuine care that I carry with me to this day, and hope to emulate onto those around me.
What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?
My proudest personal accomplishment thus far is my acceptance into Trent University. This was my first academic achievement and I was very grateful for the opportunity to participate in such an amazing program.
What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?
The most interesting thing about me is my ability to see and accept different perspectives and views. I consider it a great privilege and strength of mine to be able to listen and help my peers without judgement or my personal beliefs threatening my ability to care for and/ or provide advice. I believe seeing at things in a grey area rather then being black and white as an important part of empathy and great personal skill of mine.
What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?
My career ambition is to become a lawyer and a politician, so that I may represent children and progress children’s rights. I am currently working towards this by completing my undergraduate degree at Trent University and studying for the L-SAT, so that I may attend law school in the near future.
What would be your “dream job” in life?
My dream job in life is to become a children’s lawyer, in family law, so that I may be the one to represent their wishes and support their best interest.
Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.
I was raised on the countryside of a small town, and grew up going to school in Brantford, Ontario, where I also participated in dance for the majority of my life. I grew up with three older sisters and a single mom, each of whom showed me incredible strength and resilience. My childhood was filled with love, fun, and lots of dress-up. My sisters have always been one of the most positive forces in my life continuously making me feel beautiful from the inside out.
List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.
The most interesting job I have had was as a COVID-19 health representative at a nursing home. While working this job I had many duties, including sanitation, overseeing COVID-19 testing, and more, however, my favourite part of this job was interacting with the residents. Any spare moment I had was spent speaking with, playing board games, dancing, reading to, or helping the residents. Not only did this make my job a rewarding experience but I had the incredible opportunity to meet wonderful people with incredible stories.
List any volunteering you have done.
I have volunteered as a dance teaching assistant, camp councillor, and have volunteered at a retirement home.
What is your most unusual talent?
My most unusual talent is definitely impressions. I am very good at impersonating my favourite movie characters and musicians.
Where is the most interesting place you have been to?
The most interesting place I have been to is Florence, Italy. I had the pleasure of visiting Florence on a school trip during my high school education. Florence is filled with beautiful architecture, gorgeous views, and many kind and interesting people.
What do you hope to be doing in ten years?
In ten years I hope to be an accomplished child lawyer, on my way to opening my own practice. I also hope to start a charity for underprivileged kids, to raise money in my community so they may participate in extracurricular activities of their choosing, (the arts, sports, etc.).
