Kamilla Mihalik
Height: 5’8
Hometown: East Vancouver, BC
Languages: English, Hungarian
Occupation: Hospitality Professional
In order to understand and appreciate Kamilla’s life’s journey, you have to go back in time. From the ashes of a gray, oppressive era in Hungary, her parents emerged as rebels with a cause—pioneers of punk rock and dreamers of a life unshackled by societal chains. In the mid-1980s, they fled their homeland, her mother with her young son in tow after a broken marriage, and her father as a stowaway, surviving on crumbs glimpsed through train floor cracks. Their journey to Canada reunited them in Ottawa, where Kamilla was born in 1987, and they later migrated west to East Vancouver. She inherited a life rich with Hungarian (Magyar) traditions of language, knowledge, and fierce family bonds. Their sacrifices gifted Kamilla opportunity, a legacy she now shares with her Ojibway spouse and thier four-year-old son. Competing in this year’s Miss Universe Canada is a radiant milestone, a chance to inspire future generations of Canadians—her son included—to chase their dreams and to build communities that are rooted in common ground, resilience and love.
Kamilla’s grandparents’ stories are the heartbeat of her heritage, pulsing with love and gratitude. Her grandfather spoke of countryside life, his father a Hungarian veteran, his mother raising eight children while manning the farm. Her grandmother recalled war’s brutality on all Hungarians. Her father and uncle lost, neighbors shot and swept into the Duna River. With forgiveness in her heart, she urged Kamilla to honour the past without resentment, hate or bitterness. Summers spent with them in Hungary were Kamilla’s refuge, a cultural embrace, far from the confines of feeling out of place. Those lessons shape her still, guiding her like the Turul bird, as she passes this dual heritage—Hungarian (Magyar) and Indigenous (Ojibway)—to her family. From coaching youth basketball in her university years to stepping onto the Miss Universe Canada stage, Kamilla has sought to mentor and uplift, weaving a tapestry of humility and responsibility in community.
Strength coursed through Kamilla from a young age, a towering athlete thriving in karate, soccer, track and basketball. Sports were her sanctuary, releasing the pain of a mysterious lump under her chin that bloated her neck for years. Finally, a homeopathic surgeon and BC Children’s Hospital paired surgery with a pineapple remedy, Bromelin, to treat the ailment. At eleven, she emerged strong, outrunning kids years older. Her bedroom walls filled with awards, a testament to perseverance and her indomitable spirit. Professionally, her high-energy and love of food found a home in hospitality, where listening to others’ stories fueled her success. Encouraged by countless diverse voices, Kamilla expressed herself through writing, music, and technology. In Winnipeg’s winter wonderland, she nurtures her son’s growth by blending cultures as she carves out a life of purpose and connection.
Art also became Kamilla’s rebellion against betrayal, echoing her father’s filmmaking and her childhood poetry recitations. A decade-long wound from a broken romance healed as she rebuilt—wiser, softer, resolute—turning from acting to craft authentic experiences in dining, events, and tourism. Philanthropy grew alongside, raising funds for causes like cancer research, neighbourhood houses and mental health. Kamilla cherishes meaningful conversations with people from all walks of life as equally impactful and has a soft spot for society’s unseen. She believes that change comes from within and is possible by practicing humility and patience through the five senses. The Miss Universe Canada stage is a gift, a platform to show her son and others that dreams are worth pursuing. Cherishing motherhood’s unique moments, Kamilla coaches youth and builds community while honouring her Magyar ancestors’ endurance, ensuring that their sacrifices bloom anew in not just her family’s future but for the Universe.
