Height: 5’2

Languages: English
Occupation: Certified Coach & Entrepreneur

Maria Giorlando-Cuevas is a proud Sicilian-Croatian Canadian and self-made entrepreneur who turned a dream into a thriving global coaching company. With no formal background in business and no family history of entrepreneurship, she left a 7-year career in Long-Term and Hospice Nursing to pursue her passion for empowering women. In just six years, she scaled her business to generate over $500,000 in revenue, built a global community of more than 100,000 followers, and now reaches millions monthly through content that blends visibility, mindset, and mission-driven leadership.

Beyond business, Maria is a multi-passionate woman who believes deeply in connection, culture, and growth. A former competitive soccer player with over 25 years of experience, she carries the discipline and resilience of sport into every area of her life. Her love for travel has taken her to 29 countries from the futuristic energy of Singapore to family roots in El Salvador, beach escapes in the Philippines, and cultural deep dives across Italy, Montenegro, and Europe, shaping her perspective as a compassionate global citizen.

Maria’s platform, Confidently Connected, is a global movement built to help women lead with confidence, visibility, and purpose. What began as a personal passion project became a world-traveling sash signed by hundreds of women, dozens of empowerment workshops, and a collection of charitable events that have raised over $25,000 for causes like Make-A-Wish Canada and CHAMPS War Amps. She has volunteered hundreds of hours over the last 9 years and has spoken on prestigious stages such as the Optimist International Convention and the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers, using her voice to inspire a new generation of heart-led female leaders.

As she steps onto the Miss Universe Canada stage, Maria represents not only Canada, but a powerful voice for women leading with courage, service, and leadership worldwide.

Q&A

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

My greatest passion is business, branding, and building powerful, purpose-driven relationships that uplift and inspire women. After seven years as a Registered Nurse in Long-Term Care and Hospice, I realized I was meant to make a different kind of impact. Through the world of pageantry, I found the confidence and clarity to step into entrepreneurship. What began as sharing my story online has grown into a global coaching company, a supportive online community of over 100,000 followers, and hundreds of women served each year through programs and mentorship.

I’ve attended countless events and retreats focused on women in business and personal development and I now host my own. So far, I’ve led two transformational retreats welcoming women from across Canada and the USA, creating space for learning, healing, and bold action. I’m equally committed to my own personal growth, carving out time each day for self-care, reflection, and goal setting. Whether I’m leading a room or journaling in quiet, I believe the most powerful leaders are the ones who stay connected to who they are and where they’re growing.

My French Bulldog, Frank, keeps me grounded and joyful, and traveling to 29 countries has been one of the most enriching parts of my life. I believe that global exposure and deep self-awareness are what allow us to lead with compassion, and represent with purpose, on a global level.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

My background reflects a lifelong dedication to both education and personal development.

  • Institute for Coaching Mastery Graduate, Mastery Method Certified Coach (2021)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Honours Distinction), University of Windsor (2017), with a certificate in the Fundamentals of Hospice and Palliative and Long-Term Care (2021)
  • Public Speaking Graduate, Youth Speakers University (2019), where I learned how to use storytelling as a catalyst for inspiration and change
  • Certified Personal Training Specialist, Canfitpro (2020)
  • Certified Exercise & Habits Coach, DTS Fitness Education (2020)

These certifications have allowed me to uniquely combine health, mindset, and communication in my coaching business, helping women lead stronger, more confident lives inside and out.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

Soccer has been a central part of my identity for over 25 years. I’ve captained teams, competed across the province, and now continue to play recreationally, not just for the love of the game, but for the spirit of sisterhood and sportsmanship it fosters. In Winter 2024, my team won the recreational league championship and I was proudly nominated MVP among all women in the league, an honour that reminded me how leadership and consistency still shine, no matter the stage.

I’ve also completed several 5K races and the Toronto Scotiabank Half Marathon, finding peace and power in the rhythm of running. Sports have taught me to lead from within, to show up especially when it’s hard, and to trust my training and my path, no matter what mile or moment I’m in.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

My husband Carlos is the definition of unwavering belief. When I felt the fear of leaving a secure career in nursing to follow my vision as a full-time entrepreneur, he was the one who reminded me of my purpose and passion for helping others across the globe through coaching and mentorship. His quiet strength and endless encouragement have empowered me to take risks, own my voice, and build a life I once only dreamed of. Together, we recently bought our dream home, built a business filled with creativity and innovation that allows me the freedom to work from home and make my own schedule, and designed a life grounded in love and service. His support reminds me daily that behind every confident woman is someone who believes in her deeply, and I strive to be that for others.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

My proudest accomplishment is building a multi–six-figure global coaching business entirely from scratch, with no investors, no business degree, and no roadmap. This all came from a bold dream, a laptop, and a relentless work ethic day in and day out. While spending seven years as a nurse in long-term and palliative care, I made the life-changing decision to also pursue entrepreneurship with zero followers, zero products, and zero guarantees. I began showing up online with a message I believed in that women deserve to feel confident, seen, and in control of their future.

In just under six years, I have now generated over $500,000 in revenue, built a personal brand followed by over 100,000 people, and supported thousands of women globally through my coaching programs, live events, and retreats. Even more meaningful than the numbers is the ripple effect, seeing women go from uncertain to unstoppable, building brands, businesses, and platforms of their own that change lives.

As a first-generation entrepreneur in my family, I’ve redefined what’s possible, not just for myself, but for every woman who has ever doubted her ability to lead or make a living doing what she loves. I now mentor other Canadian women in launching their own online businesses from the ground up, because I believe our stories are not only meant to inspire, they’re meant to spark action.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I love traveling and have been fortunate to explore 29 beautiful countries including Europe’s timeless charm, Montenegro’s breathtaking coasts, the vibrant culture of the Philippines, and the rich heritage of El Salvador. Each journey has deepened my appreciation for the world’s diversity and reinforced my belief that travel expands not just our horizons, but our hearts.

On my dream honeymoon in Asia, I fell ill with pneumonia on the second day, missing the chance to explore Thailand and Vietnam. Though initially disappointing, I chose to embrace gratitude and presence in the moment. That one day in Singapore, standing on the rooftop of Marina Bay Sands, watching the sun set over the sparkling cityscape, became a powerful reminder that life’s most beautiful moments often come unexpectedly.

This experience taught me that life rarely unfolds as planned, but within every detour lies an opportunity to grow, find joy, and hope for what’s still ahead. Whether navigating business challenges, pageant stages, or travel setbacks, I carry this resilient mindset with me to lead with grace, stay adaptable, and cherish the journey. My husband and I have stopped calling it a ‘once in a lifetime trip’ and instead talk about how excited we are to go back one day, because some dreams are worth revisiting again and again.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My ultimate goal is to build a million-dollar brand that stands as a beacon of empowerment and possibility for women worldwide. Central to this vision is launching a signature global business academy designed to help women create freedom-based careers from the ground up. This academy will teach essential skills in branding, content creation, visibility, and heart-led sales, while fostering a mindset of confidence and resilience. More than just a business, I want this academy to be a movement, one that offers mentorship, resources, and community to women who feel lost or overlooked, especially those without a clear path forward.
Beyond education, my business will serve as a platform to fund scholarships, support women-owned startups, and invest in community projects that uplift and transform lives. I envision a future where women everywhere can step into their power, build sustainable careers doing what they love, and leave a legacy of impact and inspiration. This mission is deeply personal to me based on the journey of entrepreneurship I began 6 years ago, and I am driven every day to make it a reality for all women across Canada and across the globe.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

My dream job perfectly blends my passions: mentoring women, public speaking, and creating meaningful global impact. I aspire to be a global ambassador for women’s empowerment, traveling the world to host workshops, lead conferences, and speak on stages that inspire and uplift. Through storytelling and authentic connection, I want to help women rediscover their power, purpose, and potential, showing them that no matter where they start, greatness is within reach.

As Miss Universe Canada, this dream would come alive through service, advocacy, and leadership on an international scale. I would champion causes that support education, women’s entrepreneurship, and mental health, using my voice and platform to open doors and create opportunities. Ultimately, my dream job is a life of meaningful influence where I can inspire a wave of courageous, confident women to rise and lead the next generation.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised in the vibrant and culturally rich city of Windsor, Ontario, a place known for its strong community spirit, beautiful riverfront views, and a tapestry of diverse cultures. Growing up with my older brother and sister, my childhood was full of joy, family gatherings, and endless summer days spent by the pool or at soccer tournaments. Windsor’s close-knit neighborhoods and frequent festivals created a backdrop of celebration and togetherness that deeply shaped my values.

One of my most cherished memories is watching the annual fireworks over the Detroit River with my parents and grandparents. That moment of awe, surrounded by family and the glow of the city skyline, taught me about the beauty of unity and the power of shared joy. Those early experiences instilled in me a love for community and the simple moments that make life extraordinary.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

My first job was working as a banquet server at a local Italian hall, a lively place filled with music, celebration, and rich traditions every weekend. What makes this job truly special to me is that it’s where I unknowingly met my now-husband when we were both just 16 years old. We didn’t connect then, but years later, we reconnected and realized our paths had crossed long before our love story began. It’s a beautiful reminder that life plants seeds long before we understand their meaning.

That early job taught me the value of hard work, humility, and community connection, skills that have served me well in both business and life. It also reminds me that sometimes the most unexpected places and moments can shape our futures in the most meaningful ways.

Personal Philanthropy & Leadership

Under my own platform, Confidently Connected, I have led multiple virtual and in-person speaking initiatives that promote positive pageantry, confidence, and a global sisterhood of empowered women. Inspired by my dedication to service and leadership, Delta Sigma Kappa Sorority, an international organization, adopted my concept of a Service Sisterhood Leadership sash, awarded monthly to one delegate who exemplifies community service and leadership, continuing the legacy of giving back.

As the founder of Miss Queen of the Screen, I have proudly produced and hosted this annual virtual pageant fundraiser for the past five years, welcomed over 75 delegates, and raised over $3,500 for impactful charities including Make-A-Wish Canada, Sparkle a Smile, and the CHAMPS War Amps Program. In addition to this, I have hosted my own impactful events such as a fashion show fundraiser for sick kids which raised $4,500, and a Pageant Trivia and Game Night that raised and donated $1,000 to Northern Ontario Friends and Family of Children with Cancer. Another meaningful initiative I led, Let’s Get PURSE-onal, collected and donated 75 purses filled with essential items to local women’s shelters, emphasizing self-care and empowerment.

Optimist International Service & Global Impact

A proud member of Optimist International for 5 years, I dedicated myself to community service and leadership, making history as the first female Vice President of my local club. During this time:

  • Served as Vice President and Board Member for multiple Optimist clubs
  • Chaired and co-chaired numerous major events, including the Optimist Family Fun Fair welcoming over 500 families, and seasonal charity drives
  • Advocated successfully for a $1,000 scholarship awarded to a local pageant titleholder, supporting youth leadership
  • Spoken and emceed at district conventions and international summits
  • Contributed to collective fundraising efforts totaling over $200,000 across four years, benefiting local schools, community events, and families in need

Community Events and Speaking

Passionate about creating joy and connection for young people, I have volunteered extensively in children’s events, including:

  • Serving as a Volunteer Princess and Coordinator for the Princess Ball for Cystic Fibrosis for three consecutive years
  • I have had the privilege of emceeing International Women’s Day events like Women With Drive and the Yamaska Club Celebration Dinner, inspiring women across Canada to embrace resilience and empowerment.
  • Organizing community events such as yard sales, craft days, Easter egg hunts, and pumpkin drives
  • Supporting oratorical contests and scholarship programs through local schools and service clubs

Many of these roles involved leading teams of volunteers, fundraising, and cultivating safe, inclusive spaces for hundreds of children and families.

Creative & Promotional Work for Community Causes

Using my background in modeling, social media, and event production, I have supported Canadian small businesses and fundraising initiatives by:

  • Collaborated with local business Stitching Sunshine to create three female beauty products, raising $300 for Make-A-Wish Canada
  • Hosted a Pageant Trivia and Game Night, raising and donating $1,000 to Northern Ontario Friends and Family of Children with Cancer (NOFCC)
  • Organized Let’s Get PURSE-onal, collecting and donating 75 purses filled with essential items to women’s shelters
  • Participated in multiple fundraisers and promotional events supporting local mental health organizations and health and wellness campaigns through live appearances and event hosting

Throughout my journey, I have dedicated myself to meaningful service that combines leadership, creativity, and sustainability. Driven by a deep commitment to empower women and uplift youth, I use every crown and platform I hold to create lasting positive change in my community and beyond.

What is your most unusual talent?

With 25 years of playing soccer, juggling the ball with my thighs has always been a bit of a fun challenge. Back in the day, I used to compete with teammates to see who could get the highest number of touches, and I can still keep it going today. With some practice, I can hit 40 to 50 consecutive juggles. It’s a simple skill that keeps me connected to the game and always keeps me on my toes.

Where is the most interesting place you have been to?

I recently spent 10 incredible days in El Salvador, attending Miss Universe 2023 in San Salvador with my husband, who is proudly Salvadoran. We explored the vibrant city of San Miguel, met his family, and fully immersed ourselves in the rich culture and warm hospitality of his homeland. I may have indulged in a little too much horchata along the way, but every sip was a sweet reminder of the beautiful traditions that make El Salvador so special. This trip not only allowed me to witness the pageant on a global stage but also deepened my connection to his roots and the incredible community he comes from.

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

Ten years from now, I see myself thriving as a mother while leading a successful global business and empowerment school for women. I want to build a brand that allows me to balance family life with my passion for mentoring and inspiring women around the world. Traveling to new countries and hosting transformational retreats will be a big part of this journey, connecting with diverse communities and expanding my impact. Through it all, I’ll continue reminding women that they are capable of far more than they’ve been told, helping them unlock their full potential and create lasting generational change.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

Nine years ago, I was first introduced to the pageant world right here in Windsor, from a city known for its incredible Miss Universe Canada legacy. Since then, I have grown tremendously, as a global leader, influencer, and businesswoman. Over the past decade, I have had the privilege of raising more than $25,000 for charities through my own events and impacting tens of thousands of women with my message of empowerment. Now, I’m deeply grateful for the chance to share the stage at Miss Universe Canada, feeling more prepared and determined than ever to represent my community and amplify the voices of women everywhere. This journey isn’t just about wearing a crown, it’s about using that platform to inspire and uplift all Canadians.
