A very talented Canadian film and television costume designer Alex Kavanagh created Miss Universe Canada’s national costume for Miss Universe. The concept for the costume is to pay respect to the sport of Ice Hockey. It truly is a sport that defines Canada. All across the country, on frozen backyard ponds, community rinks and in state-of-the-art arenas, Canadians are playing this national winter sport. It is one of our most celebrated pastimes! The game is invariably tied to our collective sense of what it means to be Canadian and is perhaps our most identifiable icon. There is no greater force that unifies Canadians than hockey. It brings together communities and it teaches our children the meaning of dedication to sport and teamwork. Most importantly however, it shows the pride we have for our country! Hockey is a part of our national identity and culture!

“We are inspired by the silhouette of the Rococo era to help showcase the rectangular shape of the hockey rink, while creating a glamorous and stunning gown. We have used the elements of the game of hockey to embellish the costume and finish this representation of the hockey arena experience. We have chosen light sparkly fabrics to help depict the ice, as well as to have great stage presence. This costume tells a story about Canada, while also highlighting Chanel’s beautiful physique. Chanel was very interested in adding a light element to the costume, and when considering what would make the most sense with a hockey theme, the scoreboard was decided on. A custom circuitry board was designed to be light yet functional so the 1716 LED lights could be functional. There are 1716 LED lights in the sign, centre core of the sign is a high density styrofoam. There’s circuit boards specifically designed for the scoreboard. The frame of the scoreboard is fabricated out of aluminum. There is a copper wire, silver solder and lithium ion batteries to power it”.
