Sarah Lambros is 25 years old, born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She has a Bachelor of Science from the University of British Columbia, majoring in Geophysics and minoring in Geology. Q&A

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?

My primary interests involve science, public speaking, fitness, and community involvement. I also enjoy spending time with others, listening to music, sewing and crocheting, attending the theatre, discovering local coffee shops with my friends and family, and exploring the outdoors.

List any special training you have had (music, art, drama, dance, etc.)

Throughout my youth, I trained as an Irish dancer and competed on international stages in both solo and team competitions.

I am also an experienced horseback rider and have received training in both Western and English disciplines.

In what sports, if any, have you participated?

In middle school and high school, I competed in Irish dancing, rowing, cross country, and track and field. I currently participate non-competitively in horseback riding, rock climbing, weightlifting, and various outdoor sports.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?

My friend and mentor, Brendan, who was my public speaking and education coach when I was the 2023 Calgary Stampede Princess. Throughout my reign, he helped me develop the ability to excel within my role and provided unwavering support as I learned how to navigate being a public figure.

After my year as Princess, Brendan has continued to offer guidance and mentorship whenever I come across a new opportunity. He has always been somebody who believes in my abilities, celebrates my accomplishments, and understands my constant desire to keep pushing myself, and I can’t thank him enough for the influence he has had on my life.

What is your proudest personal accomplishment (other than participating in this pageant)?

As the 2023 Calgary Stampede Princess, I served as an ambassador for the Calgary Stampede, the city of Calgary, and the relationship between the organization and the First Nations of Treaty 7 alongside the Calgary Stampede First Nations Princess. I dedicated over 1000 volunteer hours within my role and delivered more than 100 greetings and speeches at events with up to 80 000 people.

After my year, I learned that the Calgary Stampede used an audio clip of one of my greetings for an exhibit in the SAM Centre, a year-round Stampede museum and visitor centre. I began my reign hoping to develop stronger public speaking skills, and discovering that my voice was chosen to continue welcoming visitors from around the world was a defining moment for me. It felt like a testament to my ability to learn and my performance as an ambassador.

My reign brought me significant growth and accomplishments, helping me realize my potential and prompting me to wonder what else I can achieve if I continue to work hard.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?

I was once involved in a conversation with a Canadian astronaut, the first female President of the Canadian Space Agency, and the Administrator of NASA! Not only was this a unique and unforgettable experience, but I distinctly remember the Administrator asking me a question about a topic in which I had substantial knowledge. It was incredibly exciting to share what I knew with such impressive and accomplished individuals in a field closely related to my own education.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I believe that Canada’s energy and mining industries have the potential to use our current knowledge and technologies to create a more sustainable future while strengthening Canadian jobs in every province and territory. I also believe that these developments can be synonymous with providing Indigenous and rural communities with more ownership over their energy and environmental needs.

I recently completed a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Geophysics and a Minor in Geology, and I am currently working in the energy industry in downtown Calgary. By learning from colleagues and networking at industry events, I am continually expanding my knowledge of Canada’s geoscience industry, and I am actively seeking out opportunities to build the future that I am passionate about. As a woman in STEM and a proud Pageant Queen, I also hope to show future generations that potential and intelligence can go hand in hand with femininity.

What would be your “dream job” in life?

One of my core values is using my abilities and strengths in the way that most benefits my community. I do not yet know what the perfect role would be, but I am interested in working as a geophysicist or executive in a sustainability-oriented energy company that supports nearby communities through employment and charitable initiatives.

While I currently have goals and plans for my career, I am flexible and always seeking out new opportunities that allow me to have a positive impact on my community.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised in Springbank, Alberta, alongside my older twin brothers and younger sister. Throughout my childhood, I competed in horseback riding and Irish dancing, and I loved to be involved in any extracurriculars that I could fit into my schedule. This included MCing school events, participating in the Calgary Youth Science Fair, and joining every leadership program that was available in middle school and high school.

In addition to my competitive sports, I also enjoyed snowboarding, hiking, archery, and mountain biking. I have always been open to trying new things and I am very fortunate to have a supportive family that has always encouraged me to be ambitious.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

Throughout university, I worked as a barista, a server, a tutor, a marketing associate, and an undergraduate summer student. While I haven’t held any particularly unusual positions, from May to July of 2024 I had three jobs – one full time and two part time – alongside two volunteer roles. Some weeks included multiple 16-hour days, which was certainly a lot of work, but it was worth it for the experiences I gained and the friends I’ve made!

List any volunteering you have done.

Current Volunteering:

  • Calgary Stampede Queens’ Alumni Committee
    • Co-Chair of the Giddy-Up Grits Subcommittee
    • Committee Social Media Manager
  • Calgary White Hat Awards as an annual Semi-Finalist Interviewer

What is your most unusual talent?

I can make balloon animals! I’m no expert, but I understand how to shape balloons and I can make a pretty convincing dog.

I also own and can shoot a longbow.

Where is the most interesting place you have been to?

In middle school, I went to Scotland to compete at the All Scotland Irish Dance Championships. I have very fond memories of travelling around the country with my Mum and I am so fortunate to have a mother like her who has always provided me with such incredible opportunities. She’s also an amazing travel companion if you like to be busy and make the most out of your trip!

What do you hope to be doing in ten years?

In 2018, I hoped that by 2025 I would have a degree in Biology and be halfway through medical school – I didn’t even know that Miss Universe Canada existed! Now, I have a degree in Geophysics, two Calgarian titles that I am incredibly proud of, and I am committed to putting my best foot forward at this year’s Miss Universe Canada Pageant.

I have learned that I am the type of person to embrace any opportunity that comes my way, so I hope that in 10 years, I will be doing something new and exciting – something that I can’t even imagine yet.

Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t asked?

Fun Fact: Starting in January 2024, I set the goal of seeing how much I could deadlift by the end of April 2024. By creating my own training schedule and waking up early to work out 6 times per week (on top of a full course load, two part time jobs, and volunteering), I was able to lift over 1.9x my body weight by the end of the school semester. I am proud to have completed this goal, especially since it was entirely self-directed!
